If songwriters are your heroes, like they are for me, you have to put John Hiatt high on your list. He’s at the top of mine.
John Hiatt is one of the premier Americana artists. He’s definitely undervalued as a songwriter, in spite of the fact that hundreds of people have covered his songs.
You could call him a songwriter’s songwriter.
Any songwriter wishes they had written “Feels Like Rain”, “Have a Little Faith in Me”, “Memphis in the Meantime”, just to name a few.
So when you get the chance to hear him talk about his songs and how he wrote them… well that’s a great opportunity to learn and dig into a great songwriter’s mind.
Big Kev, one of the great friends of our station, has been gracious enough to share something he does on his own radio show. It’s a segment called Gimme Five where he interviews songwriters and asks them to share the story of how they wrote five of their songs.
One of his shows was with John Hiatt. The podcast is below.
In the show he talks with John about five of his songs including:
- “Gone” from Crossing Muddy Waters
- “The Last Time” from Beneath This Gruff Exterior
- “Cry To Me” from his new album The Eclipse Sessions (done live here)
- “She Don’t Love Nobody” Bring the Family
- “Have A Little Faith in Me” from Beneath This Gruff Exterior
Big Kev really brings out some extra info too, like…
- does he write on guitar or keyboard?
- thoughts on the musicians who covered his songs?
- who are some of his heroes?
We hope you enjoy this great show…
